Visa Requirements

To enter into the territory of Ukraine, a foreign national will require an entry visa. Receiving a study invitation letter doesn’t automatically entitle a foreign national right of access into the territory of Ukraine.

There are different types of visas issued by the Ukrainian diplomatic mission, but the one required for prospective international students planning to study in Ukraine is the “Type D” visa. It is the visa category that allows longer stay duration of more than 90 days, in Ukraine.

Ukraine has some bilateral agreement with some countries for a visa-free regime on business, tourist, medical or private purposes for a period not exceeding 90 days. Nationals and citizens of such countries still require a “Type D” visa to enter Ukraine, which will enable them to stay for duration longer than 90 days.

With countries such as Georgia, Moldova, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Russia, Ukraine signed a bilateral agreement for a visa-free regime. Nationals of these countries do not require a visa to enter the territory of Ukraine. However, if they are travelling to Ukraine for educational purposes, they will have to present the original invitation letter, from the university that offered them a provisional admission, when crossing the border.

As you may have probably observed, there are different requirements for nationals of different countries. Each prospective candidate is therefore advised to check the the Ukrainian consulate in their home country or country of residence for the applicable requirements. A visit to the embassy website might be a good place to begin from.
